I need something to read for the start of uni again, I prefer action and fantasy books, but love crime and alternate history styles too. What are your favourite books and why should I read them?

For alternate history, try Romanitas. It's a kind of action/drama set in the modern day roman empire.

For fantasy, Magician by Raymond Fiest. it's the start of an absolutely epic series.

      And, of course, anything Pratchett.

I recommend The Dresden Files. PI Harry Dresden is a wizard in modern Chicago.

If you're into Star Wars, The New Jedi Order was an amazing series, pretty long though

Ive recently started a book called "Throne of Glass" by Sarah J Maas. Its like, if Game of Thrones, Hunger Games, and The Mortal Instruments had a baby. If you havent read The Mortal Instruments yet, theyre really worth it. Id also suggest the Odd Thoman series, my bae is addicted to the series.

The one book I have on display - Orchid eater by Marc Laidlaw. (Or alternatively, try another of his, he is an incredible writer)

Never the Bride, Paul Magrs = great book, alternative and some far flung storytelling.

Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. It's got action, all mythologies, and a ton of humor. you can't go a chapter without at least a little laughter.

Prisoners of Ourselves: Totalitarianism in everyday life: Gunduz Y. H. Vassaf

Outside the genre's you are asking about, however, an excellent read for Social Science students.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six; although most of Tom Clancy's books can be rather dry, and I'm not a fan of most of them for that reason, Rainbow Six is by far one of the best books I've read and is a great action/crime/military/thriller novel. Absolute must-read (in my opinion); and the only Tom Clancy book I whole-heartedly recommend.

Metro 2033 if you're into post-apocalyptic books, one of my favorites of the genre. A little bit of action/supernatural/horror all rolled into one. A fun read, that I have no problems reading multiple times.
